Notice the top board on Jane. LEDs are very useful during development because they can tell you what's going on in your robot's brain. If they are tied to the sensors, they can tell you which sensors are seeing walls and which ones aren't. If they are controlled by your microcontroller, you can program them to turn on at key points as an aid in debugging your softwre.
